Archive: Doctor Foster went to Gloucester…

The BBC five-part series Doctor Foster came to an end on Wednesday night, starring Suranne Jones as the titular character Dr Gemma Foster. It tells the unwinding tale of why they say Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

I saw the advert for Doctor Foster after an episode of The Great British Bake Off, but I wasn’t particularly drawn into the plot to tune in of my own will. It wasn’t until a couple of colleagues at work one day, gushed about how great it was, how it was intense and well written and laden with twists and turns. At this point they were only two episodes deep, and so I thought, heck why not.

After the first predictably paved episode, I honestly thought that I had wasted 50 minutes of my life. But, following my very own lived by rule; Never judge an episode by its Pilot… or second episode, I ploughed through until the third episode, whereby my opinion was somewhere around intrigued indifference.

I saved up the last two episodes to watch back to back as there was no way I was about to wait week to week for the conclusion of this five part series, and quite honestly, if it wasn’t for Series Link, I would have completely forgotten about it.

It took them three agonisingly long episodes to get it right, as the last two instalments is when Doctor Foster finally got interesting. I finally understood where the passion in the voices of my colleagues came from as they discussed the first two episodes. At last I was filled with apprehension, my nerves jittering, my mind playing through a thousand different scenarios a second as tried to work out what was going to happen next, and how when it reached boiling point, it would all end.

Luckily five episodes isn’t too much of an investment, any more and I would have said Doctor Foster wasn’t worth watching to get to these two golden final episodes.

There is an explosive character development for the good Doctor, but at the end of the day, when the credits had rolled and iplayer came to an end, I couldn’t help but wonder what was the morale of it all?

I’ll leave that for you to ponder after you’ve delved waist deep into the world of Doctor Foster.
